Your camera's 500 metres down a corridor. Your endpoint's in the shed at the back of the site. Cat6 tops out at 100 metres and you're stuck running new cable or upgrading the whole run.
This little box converts your copper to single-mode fibre and stretches the link out to 20 km. WDM means you only need one strand — transmit on 1310nm, receive on 1550nm — so you're not hunting for a second fibre pair in a cramped conduit.
The 802.3af PoE port on the other end powers your camera or AP directly. No extra injector, no extra power drop at the far end. Plug in, it works.
Runs from 0 to 50 °C, so it's happy in an unheated server cupboard or a shaded outdoor cabinet. Auto-negotiates half or full duplex.
