Your KM or KN series switch is live, but the server behind it only speaks DisplayPort. And you need the audio pulled out of that DP stream for a headset or a small speaker in the room. The KA7189 handles both in one go. RJ45 into the switch, DisplayPort plus two USB connectors into the server, and you've got video, embedded audio, keyboard, mouse, Virtual Media, and Smart Card/CAC reader support on a single cable pair.
Auto Signal Compensation means no DIP-switch fiddling for different cable runs. Resolution tops out at 1920×1200 (reduced blanking). At a compact form factor it tucks behind a rack unit without fighting cable ties.
One honest heads-up before you plug in: if your server is running Intel HD/UHD Graphics 630, this adapter won't play nice. ATEN recommends the KA7188 paired with either the VC985 converter (DP++ systems) or the VC986 (non-DP++ systems). Check that before you commit.
Both USB connectors must be seated in the server's USB ports for the adapter to draw enough power. Don't skip one.
