You've got a 2014 hard drive in a shoebox and you need the photos on it by Friday. Or a school IT tech's testing a pulled IDE drive and needs to read it without cracking open a desktop. Either way, you don't want to hunt for a proprietary cable or wait on a national chain's six-day shipping.
The SA492C slots in 2.5" and 3.5" SATA or IDE drives, plus 5.25" optical units, and talks to your laptop over USB-C at up to 5 Gbps. Plug it in, flip the switch, copy files. No drivers. No fiddling with jumper settings on the IDE connector – the built-in power header handles that.
It ships with a dedicated 12 V / 2 A power adapter so your 3.5" spinners actually get enough juice to spin up, and a USB-C-to-USB-A combo cable means you can use it on last year's MacBook or this year's Windows ultrabook without hunting for an extra dongle.
ABS housing, 9.4 × 5.7 × 1.6 cm – small enough to live in a drawer and pull out when the next dead drive shows up. Works on Windows 7+, macOS 10.8+, and Linux. Twenty units on our shelf right now.
