You've got a lovely HD44780 LCD on your bench, but wiring it up eats six or seven microcontroller pins and you need those pins for everything else. This PCF8574 port expander board mounts behind the panel, takes up almost no space, and lets you drive the whole display over just two I2C pins. You get a contrast control pot on the back so you stop fiddling with a screwdriver, a jumper for the LED backlight, and up to eight unique addresses via solder-able jumpers if you're stacking multiple displays. Solder it to standard 16-pin SIL headers, drop in the Arduino library, and your display just works. Sorted
