You've got a small audio project — a mic preamp, a classroom intercom, a hobby speaker driver — and you need an amp that actually fits in the enclosure. The Champ does exactly that. Built around the LM386 IC, it pushes 0.5W into 8 ohms from a standard 9V supply, but runs happily anywhere from 4 to 12VDC. Smaller than a 9V battery, so it tucks into tight boxes where a board the size of a credit card won't. Variable gain means you dial in the level without adding a separate pot. PCB and every component are in the box. Solder it, power it, done
